2009 Annual Review
HKUSTAA is a unique and valuable network of mostly young professionals across industries. This network exists for 3 purposes: 1. Empower Alumni. 2. Give Back to HKUST. 3. Contribute to the Society. It is my honor to serve the Association. This report highlights some of the achievements by a team of enthusiastic alumni with which I am proud to work with.
1. Empower Alumni
Launched first-of-its-kind Graduate Mentoring Program
We have invited 11 multinationals to provide mentors for this innovative program for our young graduates. We have received a large number of application of mentees since the opening for application. Based on their quality of application, 13 were invited. The kick off ceremony officiated by HKUST president Professor Tony Chan was held on 16th Oct with him and Prof. Roland Chin (Deputy to the President), Prof. YS Wong (Vice President for Administration and Business), Charles Ho (GMP Program Director) and myself to join the toast. It is our pleasure to have the presence of many Deans and mentors as VIPs as well.
An advertorial in Sing Tao was published on 22nd Oct as an acknowledgement to all supporters. The program was also reported by Ming Pao on 16th Oct, 17th Oct and Sing Tao on 24th Nov.

Continued Project Sundial
3 successful entrepreneurs have accepted our invitation to contribute and be part of this innovative project which aims at promoting inspiring entrepreneur stories of HKUST alumni, establishing the first entrepreneurship scholarship in HKUST and building a quality network among HKUST entrepreneur alumni. -Raised HK$11500 for our Alma Meter
Outreached to the future alumni through the Outstanding Student Executive Awards (OSEA)
OSEA is a voluntary service internship for HKUST students and was firstly launched in February 2009.
-Over 50 program applicants,
-Around 25 shortlisted for interview and training,
-13 Student Executives (should be Student Executives or students and executives) appointed,
-9 Student Executives (as above) awarded Certificates of Merits,
-2 received the Outstanding Student Executive Award presented by President Professor Paul Chu on 11th May 2009,
-OSEA award news reported by Ming Po on 2009/5/12.
Supported Confluence Dinner
The HKUST Alumni Confluence Dinner was held on 13 May 2009. Over 20 alumni joined this meaningful event. Our sincere gratitude to alumni speaker - Dr Jack Lau, awardee of Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2000, for his sharing on his past campus experience, entrepreneurship, and advice to the students in career development.
Senior administrator visit
The Executive Commitee has visited the HKUST President, Deputy President, 2 Vice Presidents, 3 Deans and other 10 Senior Administrators of HKUST after inauguration.

Service to Ethnic Minority
- Partnership with the Salvation Army
1. Fifteen alumni enjoyed a cross ethnic Chinese New Year party with Nepalese children as well as Chinese elderly persons on 17 and 24 January.
2. Twelves alumni and family enjoyed a day trip to Tai Tong Lychee Valley with ethnic minority families on 12 April.
Service to the Youth
- Partnership with Young Entrepreneurs Development Council
Formed 8 team per semester (Feb - May and Oct - Jan), each consists of 3 members, for School-Company Partnership (SCP) Programme which aims as helping secondary students connect to the commercial world to acquire an entrepreneurial mindset prior to entering the workforce.
Service in Poverty - partnership with Oxfam Rice Sale and HKUST
Arranged over 80 HKUST students to participate in the Oxfam Rice Sale during the weekends of May
Association Development
Annual Dinner at the Hong Kong Jockey Club
To attract even more alumni to come back, for the first time, we will hold our Annual Dinner outside the HKUST campus. The move is challenging both financially and operationally. Thanks to the nice work of the Exco, the program team and many others during the feasibility study, site visit and patron solicitation, we feel fortunate and excited to launch the HKUSTAA Annual Dinner:

Deloitte becomes our Honorary Auditor
We feel honored to announce that Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu has accepted our invitation to be the Honorary Auditor of HKUSTAA. Our Honorary Auditor will audit our financial statements for the year ended in March 2009. This would be the first time that HKUSTAA's financial statements be audited through a CPA firm and this would mark our first step in continual improvement of the governance of the Association. On behalf of the Association, I would like to express our appreciation to Deloitte for their support.

We received the Caring Organization 2008-09 Award from the Hong Kong Council of Social Service. The Caring Organization 2009-10 Award is under nomination.
Simplify information access and sharing
We have revamped www.ustaa.hk and built a Unified Document Infrastructure (UDI) which enables secure and convenient access of information within the Association's executives.
